Child Health in Leeds

Academic Training and Higher Degrees

We have a number of academic training posts in Paediatrics and Child Health.

Foundation Level

The two-year foundation academic posts include four months in paediatrics. The academic element is usually focused in pathology, but it would be possible to do some research linked to paediatrics. These programmes provide structured training through a two year programme which meets the requirements of the FY1 and FY2 curricula as well as enabling trainees to acquire additional skills in teaching and research. Trainees complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Research during the year. See the West Yorkshire Foundation School website for more details.

Speciality trainees

Academic Clinical Fellowships

We aim to have at least two Academic Clinical Fellowship posts at any one time. Currently these are focused on medical education, but in due course we hope to develop posts in Paediatric clinical research. These posts last for three years, and contain at least nine months of academic time. In contrast to other specialties, posts are usually aimed at more advanced trainees than ST1, usually ST3 to ST6. Trainees should aim to develop a proposal for a higher degree (usually a PhD) during the ACF.

Teaching Fellows

These posts are aimed at senior trainees (ST6-ST8), will usually last for a year, and will include 25% of the basic time for medical education. Trainees will assist with course delivery and assessment, and be encouraged to complete a higher qualification in Education.

MSc

All trainees undertake a University Postgraduate Diploma in Child Health, with the option to extend this to achieve an MSc in Child Health. The latter includes a research year.

Higher research degrees

We encourage all trainees to consider a higher degree in paediatric research (MPhils, MDs or PhDs). This might build on work completed for the MSc or follow an ACF post. Please contact the Academic Unit of Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology if you would like to discuss further

Consultants

There are many opportunities to be more involved with Teaching and the MBChB progamme, over and above the normal teaching that most consultants engage in. We are hoping to develop a consultant paediatric tutor role in the near future. Colleagues interested in writing and reviewing assessment materials for written and clinical exams are invited to get in touch with the Paediatric Course Management Team. The Admissions and Electives Teams, and the Student Support Personal Tutor roles provide other opportunities to get involved. Occasionally, secondment roles become available for specific tasks within the School of Medicine which include some agreed Programmed Activity time.

The School of Medicine offers the title of Honorary Clinical Associate Professor for a limited number of non-university NHS medical staff. Award of this honorary title is by application and then interview. Check your Trust webpages for further information.
